1. The cable or the charger
Cables fail internally where they flex at the connector, long before anything looks wrong. Try a different cable and a different brick, ideally ones you know work on another device. Test the wall socket too.
Cheap uncertified cables also fail the handshake modern iPhones require and will sometimes charge intermittently, which looks exactly like a phone fault.
2. Lint compacted in the charging port
This is the most common cause we see, by a distance. Pocket lint packs into the bottom of the Lightning or USB-C port over months until the connector physically cannot seat deep enough to make contact. The tell: the cable feels like it doesn't click in fully, or charges only at a particular angle.
Shine a light in. If you can see grey fluff, that's it. A plastic toothpick or a wooden stick, gently, with the phone powered off — never a metal pin or a paperclip, which will short the contacts and turn a free fix into a board repair.
3. A software hang
Force restart: volume up, volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Occasionally the charging management process hangs and a restart clears it. Two minutes, costs nothing, worth trying.
4. A worn charging port assembly
The port is a mechanical connector that wears with every insertion, and the flex cable behind it fails with repeated strain. Symptoms: charges only when the cable is held at an angle, or works with one cable but not another that works fine elsewhere.
It's a replaceable part, typically ₹1,500–₹3,900 depending on model, and usually a same-day job.
5. A dead or failing battery
A deeply discharged or badly degraded cell can refuse to accept charge. If the phone was left flat for weeks, leave it on a known-good charger for a full hour before concluding it's dead — deeply discharged cells need time before they show any sign of life.
6. Charging circuit damage on the logic board
The least common and the most serious: the charging IC or a related component has failed, usually after a liquid event or a bad third-party charger. This needs board-level microscope work, not a parts swap.
It is repairable — a failed charging IC is a component, not a whole board — but only by a workshop that does chip-level work. Most shops will quote you a board replacement instead, which is why it's worth asking.
Before you pay for anything
Insist on a free diagnosis. The difference between cause 2 (free) and cause 6 (board work) is enormous, and no honest shop quotes without opening it up first.

Why does my iPhone charge only at a certain angle?
Almost always lint compacted in the port, or a worn port connector. Both are cheap fixes — start by checking the port with a torch.
Can I clean my iPhone charging port myself?
Carefully, yes. Power the phone off and use a wooden toothpick or plastic pick to lift the lint out. Never use metal — you can short the contacts and cause real damage.

My iPhone won't charge after water damage. Is it repairable?
